Report for week ending July 24th
This July the weather has been nice and clear. We had the first hard day of rain for the month this Wednesday. The full moon Saturday and Sunday caused high tides and waves at the river mouth which make the trip out a little exciting, but passable!! No tarpon in the river, all the action was outside.
Ken Leathers and his children Lalista and Matthew from Welington City, New Zealand fished this Wednesday and Thursday. They jumped 12 tarpon on Wednesday and both kids boated nice fish over 120lbs. and some large Jack Crevelle.
Dr. William Casey and Esperanza Canales of Tuscon, Arizona are here on a mission for Esperanza to boat her first tarpon. They have experienced tough fishing Saturday and Sunday, jumping only three tarpon, so they've extended their stay two days to try again!!
The fish story of the week is Rick Wall, a new resident of San Jose who moved here from Guatamala. Rick is a flyfishing purist who used conventional gear this week fishing with guide Tito Brown, he planned to be here 2 days and ended up staying 5 days! After jumping 6 fish his first morning, he was hooked. When the big one finally got on, Rick got spooled and quick thinking Tito tied another rod on the reel of the empty rod and threw it overboard so Rick fought the monster on the second rod until they got enough line in to pick up the first rod and bring in the fish. Rick was stunned at the quick action! He left going to Miami to buy the correct fly rod and feathers to tie his own special flies, and will be returning soon to catch one his way, on a fly.
Our summer special of $100 per day, per angler discount continues in effect until August 15th. The weather has been great with excellent fishing until this week-end when it slowed up a bit, but still everyone has gotten a nice fish, and we're pulling for Esperanza to get hers Monday morning!
